Weller Special Reserve is simply a good value for a smooth 7 year old bourbon. Being a "wheater", it tends to be smoother and slightly sweeter than the more conventional rye style. This is similar to Makers, but also different. Wellers has a pleasant, slightly sweet aroma with notes of vanilla, caramel, etc. Interestingly, there is less of the alcohol warmth and burn than any other bourbon I have sampled. The finish is flavorful, but rather short - but even smoother than Makers. Wellers does not have the the most full flavor profile in comparison to the top shelf bourbons. Still, this is one of the easiest drinking bourbons I have come across. Did I mention that it is a sweet bourbon and really smooth? I prefer Wellers neat and it will definitely have a place in my bourbon stock.
