Reviewing this whisky with @nozinan. We recently found miniatures of the Wayne Gretzky No. 99 Red Cask Canadian Whisky which had just been released in Canada in October of this year (2016). Andrew Peller Ltd. is the parent company of Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery and Distillery. From his website, it states that this Whisky is produced in small batches from grain (rye, malted rye and corn) that has been individually mashed, fermented and distilled. Made from 100% Canadian ingredients, blended, and finished in a Gretzky wine cask. Very interesting and nice reuse of old casks.
Not sure if this is its natural color but color appears to have a dark amber look. First impressions from the nosing give some caramel and grain with hints of honey. After leaving covered for several minutes, first taste gives a sweet, smooth, slightly warming flavour. Apples and grapes and hints of spice but very light. Finish had very little after taste but from what was there tasted sweet, fruity and light. Might have enjoyed it at a higher ABV but at 40% for under $40 (CDN) it is a pretty decent value.
@Nosebleed, I think you and @Nozinan will be interested to know that according to Mark Bylok there's plans for a 99 proof:
