The independent bottler Wemyss markets single casks, but always on a strenght of 46% ABV. Their 'Vanilla Smoke' is a Bunnahabhain from 1997.
The nose is quite sharp with sauerkraut, tar and something chemical, that I cannot quite pinpoint. Toffee and fruit is struggling to rise to the fore. Not sure I like this.
On the palate, though, it improves quite a bit. I get quite a bit of tar and ashes, heavily peated and spicy, but the smokiness is nicely balanced by the sweet fruit and caramel.
The finish is long and warming.
This is a typically peated Bunna, if such a thing exists (remember that Bunna produced a lot of a-typical peated spirit in 1997).
