- Brand: West Cork
- ABV: 62%
Make no mistake, this West Cork is not own product, but sourced from other distilleries. Their own spirit is not yet mature. Moreover this is a blended Irish whiskey, so it contains both single malt and grain. The ABV is impressive: 62%. It does make me wonder if this is very young. Let’s find out.
The nose is very vegetal and even a bit chemical. Reminds me a bit of genever, white bread, lots of yeast, but not much else. Bummer.
It sets things straight on the palate though. Clear notes of grain whiskey, but that’s fine. I love Greenore, for example, so this goes down easily. The malt adds some notes op grapefruit, zest included, and honey. Pencil shavings and that chemical touch are unbecoming, however. Quaffable without diluting.
The finish is very long, but that’s no surprise with such an ABV.
If you want to shop for this one, better look around. In Germany you can buy it for less than 30 EUR, while in Ireland itself you’ll have to fork over 50 EUR.
