Where to go next?

Hello everybody! I'm somewhat new to single malts and looking for the obvious or not-so-obvious next step.

I have thoroughly enjoyed almost all the single malts i've tried so far. Here is what is on the bar so far.

Macallan 12 Oban 14 Highland Park 12 Glenlivet 12 Glenmorangie 10 (got the explorer pack with 3 different sample bottles of different finishes but haven't tried anything other than the Nectar yet) Glenmorangie Nectar D'or Lagavulin 16 Ardbeg Ugeadal Caol Ila 12 Arberlour 16 Aberlour A' bunadh Dalwhinnie 15 Dalmore 15 Jura Superstition Bunnahabhain 12 Yamazaki 12

I just bought a bottle of Springbank 10 which I am trying tonight and i also have 50ml bottles of Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18(saving for a flight tasting) as well as Macallan 18 which i am kinda saving for a later time. I really dig all the different styles I've had so far, i love whiskies with a lactic quality. Any suggestion of a place to go next? It would be cool if you guys could suggest a few whiskies that are very different in style. The only whisky i have that i'm unsure about is the Dalmore 15....seems kinda flat and boring to me and i'm a guy who likes a sherried whisky. was a huge bummer for the price i paid.

GlenDronach 15 yo Revival, Mortlach 15 yo (G&M bottling), Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Longrow CV, Talisker Distillers Edition.

We seem to have similar tastes (and cabinets). I think you'll like these.

@TpR Sounds like you are hitting lots of the major flavor profiles already. A Talisker might be a good idea (10yo would be my choice).

Of the bottles you have tried which are 3 of the top 5? That might help other people make suggestions.

@Nock @WhiskyBee @malster Yeah...I've been eying Talisker and Glendronach 15 for a week or so. Perhaps I will jump tonight and buy one! Thanks for the suggestions guys!

My tops would have to be the Aberlours, Caol Ila, Dalwhinnie (for a lighter malt), Ardbeg and the SPRINGBANK

Had the springbank lastnight, kinda swept me off my feet. Totally unique with some strange strawberry cola note throughout with all the complexity of a Highland Park (another favorite) and unique like the Bunnahabhain(also a favorite). Writing this i realize, I honestly, i dont really have a whisky which i dont really love aside from the Dalmore...The Yamazaki had a finish that was kinda dry for my taste. But she needs to be revisited.

Thanks for the input

You've tried some good ones so far. Some suggestions: Talisker 10, Balvenie 12 Doublewood, Balvenie 15, Glenlivet 16 Nadurra, Glenfarclas 12, Johnnie Walker Green, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban.

Thanks for the responses guys. Since I posted this thread I bought Talisker 10, Balvenie 15, Ardbeg 10, Highland Park 18 and Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Each one was a hit. But i must say that I expected a little more from the Laph QC...Its an amazing easy sipping and sweet malt don't get me wrong, but the finish doesn't really compare to the Ardbeg 10 in my opinion which brings me back to walking on train tracks as a youngster.

Whats gonna be the next step up in terms of peat? Preferably something accessible.

Also i really enjoyed the Springbank. The fizzy strawberry notes mixed with that drop of peat really amaze me every time. Any suggestions on a similar yet different malt in that range too?

@TpR in terms of a peat step up from Ardbeg 10 (since you have already tried the Uigeadail) I would suggest the Corryvreckan. The other two options would be Lagavuin 12yo Cask Strength or Laphroaig 10yo Cask Strength.

@TpR. If you can get hold of Longrow CV it is an excellent peated expression from Springbank. Runs about the same price as Springbank 10 and is a little different from most other peated whiskies. Gets very high marks from most of the big whisky gurus.

@michaelschout

@TpR I agree with @BlueNote & @Nock said. And just as a side note, the quarter cask might grow on you after some months. I know it did on me.

Ditto on the QC @michaelschout. Jura Prophecy is another one that grew on me and got better with some oxidization. Did anybody mention Compass Box Peat Monster for nice sweet peat?

Perhaps I should clarify. I'm actually really looking for that train coal finish. That "licking an ashtray" thing that i get from the ardbegs...and even the coal ila sometimes. Thanks for the suggestions guys. If ardbeg 10 is where it ends mostly, i'm perfectly content by that. Those whiskies do it for me and then some. I try to avoid any dragon chasing with my passion for whisky. ;) Cheers

@two_bitcowboy

@TpR After reading all the posts I hope I didn't miss somebody suggesting Ledaig 10 at 46.3%. Not your coal train, exactly, but rather you're sitting near the burn-out area at the drag strip and the cars are fueled with diesel. I love this one at just the right time, and after you get accustomed to it you know just when that is.

@TpR Ahhhh that 'ol train coal ash tray finish.

By all means grab the Laphroaig 10 year old Cask Strength. I still need to pick up the newest release but so far all have that wonderful ashtray thing. (they are very different from the Quarter Cask). And I'll stick with the Ardbeg Corry recommendation. You could also try some independent releases of Ardbeg and Laphroaig. I just got a Chieftain's Choice Ardbeg 12 year old cask strength (single cask). Total ash and coal and tar.

Now I see what you like about Springbank. It can have that coal and fresh asphalt thing along with rubber tires.

Go for Kilchoman Machir Bay or even better the Kilchomans with the red labels (I am very sorry, but I forgot their names). Bruichladdichs 3D series is also worth to try (If you can find them).
