Anyone in the US used The Whisky Exchange?

I'm curious if anyone in the US has bought whisky from sites like The Whisky Exchange? I'm interested in purchasing some bottles that aren't available in the US but am wondering if I have to pay any fees or taxes once the bottles reach the states. Shipping from the UK is already very expensive and I'm not sure I want to purchase if more fees are tacked on when going through customs. If anyone has any experience with this matter your comments would be appreciated! Thank you!

I've ordered 3 shipments from them with no problems. They label their packages in a way that avoids duty. I won't say how though, in interest of keeping that info from the powers that be.

It's certain worth it. For instance, with the current exchange rate, you can get a bottle of Highland Park 30 for $295 WITH shipping when most places stateside sell it for $400+. You'll find that you can also get bottles cheaper than you could in the UK because of the VAT refund, which is often worse than the shipping.

@lmann86 - While I have never used the Whisky exchange, I can highly recommend Loch Fyne Whiskies out of Inverary. www.lfw.co.uk The staff is very friendly and knowledgable. They also have a great selection. I visited their shop in person and had whiskies sent to the states as well as ordering from the states. Never had a problem. Hope that helps.

As an employee of The Whisky Exchange I heartily recommend our services :)

We send a lot of parcels to the USA and there isn't much rhyme or reason as to what gets picked up by customs and what doesn't. The charges and procedures vary by state so it's best to hit up your local customs office to find out what the damage could be, but we often find that smaller orders get through without any trouble.

For the more common things that you can find locally I would say it wasn't worth the potential of extra cost, but we (and other UK retailers, although we are obviously best :) ) do carry a lot of whiskies and other drinks that you can't find in the USA, at which point the extra postage and potential of extra duty starts being more worth it.

@JoeVelo Unfortunately we don't deliver to Canada - we had so many parcels sent back by customs due to import regs that we had to stop. If you're near the US border then we can send stuff to a friend on the other side for you to transport into Canada yourself, but annoyingly we can't send direct.

@JoeVelo We ship to anywhere in the USA apart from Nevada (although we're working on that) so you should be fine to get stuff sent to Florida. Generally smaller parcels don't get as much customs attention, but as ever there is a chance that you will be charged duty when your order arrives.

There are two sites I've used fairly frequently from the UK. One is The whisky Exchange and the other is MasterofMalt. I've had great success with both of them and would recommend either one.

i want to purchase 4 bottles of Sangster's Rum Cream and have it shipped as a gift to Louisiana ... you mentioned smaller orders usually get throw ... Do you consider 4 bottles of rum cream to be large order? I really don't want the person I'm purchasing it for to have to pay anything. @cowfish

@rellativity I'd say 4 bottles isn't a particular big order, but I would never assume that customs charges won't be made (it is the law, and all that).

excellent service I must say! Ordered six bottles and had them in the states four days later! I can't even get scotch from retailers in this country that fast! And no customs fees! Will definitely order from them again!

I myself have used The Whisky Exchange, Master of Malt and Single Malts Direct. I prefer doing business with the Whisky Exchange because even though I'm in California, my orders get here relatively quickly for being an international shipment. Oh, and the great customer service doesn't hurt either :)

After having read about TWE's expediency in processing and shipping orders on both this and a few other sites I went ahead and placed a small order of two bottles. Based on the feedback I was expecting to have my order processes fairly expeditiously but unfortunately that is turning out to be far from the case. I have checked the order update page as well as asked via email when I could expect the order to be processed. The response I received was "your order will be processed shortly". I placed my order on Saturday night and by close of business today my order still hasn't been processed. I must admit I am a bit letdown especially by the "shortly" bit. What does that even mean?

@MrWhiskyPants Drop me an email with your order number at billy@thewhiskyexchange.com and I'll have a look into it when I get into the office tomorrow. It's the busiest time of year at the moment, as you can imagine, so some orders are taking a little bit longer than usual to get out. When we say 'shortly' we normally mean 'today or tomorrow', but send me a mail and I'll chase it up and find out what's going on.

Billy, thank you kindly. I'm usually not a pain in the ass but as someone that has been in specialty food retail for the better part of 17 years I tend to sometimes expect a lot. I'll drop you that note and again thank you very much.

I ordered a bottle of Rosebank from The Whisky Exchange and it arrived quickly. Although it was only one time, I plan to order again from them in the future.

Just now received my order from The Whisky Exchange! Perfectly packed as expected and even with the holidays made it to my door before Xmas as the site had promised. Also thank you again to Cowfish for expediting my order, you are a damn good man. I was a little worried that I was going to have to wait based on an update from Parcel Force stating that due to the holidays packages not yet received would be available no earlier than Thursday. Low and behold I got a knock on the door and it was there! I will definitely order from TWE again.

@cowfish, if you are still out there...somewhere. I admit I have been a pest. However, my youngest graduates on 18 May. I love the story of the MacKinlays Shackleton Whisky. It is a great parlay into the adventure he is about to begin as he leaves college and begins a career, I am worried about delivery by the 17th so I can take it along to the graduation celebration. Master of Malt is committing for Thursday the 16th, My order is with you. Can you match that date? (Barring, of course, the unforeseen)

Looking for one of your magical, mystical "pings". Thanks.

I've used TWE more than a handful of times, and have always been impressed by their service. No problems, no wrong bottles, and orders received (every time) within a week. With the change in post rules in the UK shipping costs have gone up noticeably. The best way to mitigate that is to just order a ton of stuff, if not all for you, consider combining an order with somebody else.

@momlindax3 We'll put it in the post as soon as possible (if you ordered yesterday it should go out today) at which point it's out of our hands. We handle customs clearance these days so it should just zoom through to you, but it's down to the couriers now...
