The independent bottler Signatory has quite a few Auchroisk in its portfolio, primarily from 1979. This is one of those from that well known Cask Strength Collection. It is a sherry butt that was filled on 17th October 1979 and bottled on 22nd March 2006.
The sherry cask is immediately prominent on the nose. The malty and very flowery character of this Auchroisk is upholstered with sultanas, Turkish Delight and some tropical fruits like mango and pineapple, but also coffee and nougat. Caramel and toffee, honey and a bit of mint. But still rather alcoholic, though. Adding some water does wonders. It adds fresh hints of wet grass, buttercup and green tea.
It is very sharp and grainy on the palate, scorching hot. This needs water. A few drops makes it very sweet and fruity, what a surprise. Chocolate cakes with orange marmalade filling, mocha and sugared lime skin. Lovely.
The finish is long on caramel and dried fruit.
I daresay this is a rather complex beast, but it absolutely needs water. Without it is hard and sharp. Diluted it is both on the nose and definitely on the palate a truly enjoyable whisky. Thank you, Lars, for the sample.
