The Singleton is among the best selling brands for Diageo, but it’s an umbrella brand. Depending on where you live in the world, you’ll get a different malt. Today there is a Singleton of Dufftown (Europa), Singleton of Glendullan (USA) and Singleton of Glen Ord (Asia). Many moons ago there was also a Singleton of Auchroisk, but that is now discontinued. I was able to find a bottle of this from 1975.
Err… alright… this nose is a tad weird. It’s not OBE, trust me. I get soft cheese, horse’s stable, honey and sultanas. Hint of milk chocolate and… blood. Or is it rust? Mildly rotting oranges (which is not always an off-note, but it is here without a doubt). Ugh… not a fan.
Watery and very sweet on the palate, but luckily not as funky as on the nose. Raisins, baked apples with some cinnamon, stale dark beer and a touch umami. Roast beef? Lots of nuts and some chestnut. Not good, but far better than the nose announced.
The finish is rather short, metallic and honeysweet, completely devoid of spices.
The palate was okay-ish but in the finish and certainly on the nose, this was a very odd one.
