BenRiach brought three differented peated drams to the market in 2007: Arumaticus Fumosos (on rum), Hereodtus Fumosus (on sherry) and this Importanticus Fumosus (on port). It is, like its siblings, 12 years old and matured on ex bourbon casks before receiving an 18 month finish on port casks.
The sweet fruit is definitely there, but is completely pushed away by notes of earth and peat. I am instantly reminded of cow-hide. It is very creamy and somewhat meaty. A leaf of eucalyptus. If I did not know better, I would dare say I smell tomato soup with meatballs. A little odd.
On the palate it is also very creamy and heavily spiced (black peper and cloves). Bittersweet orange peel and red berries. A touch of mint and quite a bit of smoke. Very punchy, indeed.
The medium long finish is very smoky.
A nice peaty Speysider, fors ure, but I prefer the sherry finish.
