Asta Morris, Flemish for ‘if it is only just that’, is the by now almost legendary label of Bert Bruyneel. He has bottled excellent whiskies that are getting rave reviews, but his single cask BenRiach bottles are his most famous. Remember the 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1979. This are all 90+ whiskies. So whenever Asta Morris returns with a single cask, that is something to look out for. And it has happened. Bert has started his eighties series.

While anticipation levels are high, they are immediately fulfilled on this nose. Melon, caramelized pear, pineapple on the grill, juicy mandarins, strawberries. Yep, summer is here! Pour some honey over it and season it with cinnamon, vanilla and a pinch of saffron and your summer dram is almost perfect. And the oak? It remains humble.

It is wonderfully creamy, alive, honeysweet and amazingly fruity. Let the party begin: strawberry and pear, followed by melon and gooseberry. Blood oranges, yellow plums, but also tinned pineapple on syrup. Very good. Very sunny, if you know what I mean. The oak is somewhat louder now, joined by licquorice.

The long and warming finish keeps that smile on my face a little longer.

The summer may be wet and rainy up until now, this dram surely changes all that. He did it again, our friend Bert. Wonderful cask selection, sir!

You, sir, have ignited in me the emotion of jealousy. And not just of the experiences you describe but the way you describe them. You write about whisky very well. Having said that, i'll count myself lucky to sample one of these bottles even if I never read one of your reviews ever again...word up.

Thanks for the kinds words! Are these not available where you are at (where are you at, anyway)?

Oh no, no problem there i'm in Scotland so it would be a (relative) cakewalk but I have a soft rule about spending more than £120 on a bottle. I don't say doing so is ill-advised, nor do I rule it out (i do do it very occasionally) but i think, for me, there is still an awful lot of exploring to do within that price range. From the ones you've reviewed today I have the BenRiach 11 Year Old 1994 Signatory Cask Strength pancilled in on my "more expensive" shortlist.
