Birnie Moss is an intensely peated version of BenRiach, with no age statement. It is very young, around 4 years. Birnie Moss is a peat bog close to the distillery. This was one of the first releases after Billy Walker and his team took over the distillery and was originally only meant for the Spanish market, but by now it is part of their standard range.
The nose is pretty alcoholic and not much fruit can be found. With some hard work, I get a bit of white fruit, but apart from that only peat that makes this whisky smell like potato skins. The grain is overbearing too and the whole seems not to work properly.
The arrival is soft, but again this is a dreadful young beast. Some peated bubblegum with grain and hay in the background. Some plasticine, even. No, this is not very good. Salty edge.
The finish is medium long on soot and new make, with a big chemical edge at the death.
Let-down gimmick. While there are indeed quite a few good peated BenRiach uit there, this one definitely is not one of them. Around 35 EUR.
