Clearac, British Plain Spirit, New Make, White Dog. Whatever name you want to give it, this came straight from the BenRiach stills at 68% and thus has not been influenced by any oak. Embryonic whisky, so to speak. Having a soft spot for new make, I was very happy with this sample that was brought back from the distillery by my good friend Jan VC.

As with most new make, this one is both very clean and creamy on the nose. Slightly floral on heather and dandelions and something of cooked vegetables. Very sweet, too. Quince? But what makes this new make so special is the heavy influence of peat. A future Fumosus? Even diluted the peat stays in the lead. The cooked vegetables make room for fruity notes.

The peat is even more prominent on the palate. It is of course scorching hot, but you can already detect the wonderful fruity notes. Very good. Diluted everything is much more discernable (obviously). Clear hints of pear syrup, cuberdons and parma violets.

The finish is smoky and sweet, lasting very long.

To make good whisky, you need good wood. But it is equally important to have good spirit, of course. This spirit is very good indeed! After maturing on a good cask, this one is destined for greatness. Thanks agan, Jan VC!
