I purchased this bottle at a Companions of the Quaich dinner some time ago. Blue Hangar is the brand of blended malts bottled by Berry Bros. & Rudd on a periodic basis. This bottle has been open for a few months.
The colour is a pale straw. Very citrusy on the nose, with lemon pith, grapefruit, furniture polish, strawberry, kumquat and a slight hint of peat. Macadamia. Underripe banana peel. Bitter tea leaves. Malty with water. Slightly medicinal but extremely complex. Could use a bit more age.
On the palate we get more peat and citrus, with an oily mouthfeel, green apple skins, raw almond and fresh pineapple. Weetabix and a touch of sourdough. Water brings out more barley sugar and pineapple notes. Very fresh, fruity and addictive!
The finish is fruity with cereal notes, a touch of icing sugar and, again, lots of citrus pith. This is a very nice blended malt, young but very spritely and energetic. Fruity and malty with just the right touch of peat. Winner of Best Blend/Blended Malt Scotch Whisky of the Year from the 2016 Whisky Advocate Awards.
I had batch 9, and loved it. From the tasting notes, though...a very different whisky.
