Breukelen Distilling Company in Brooklyn, New York, distills this 'New York Wheat Whiskey', and ages it "a minimum of 4 months in new American oak." The reviewed sample was aged 205 days. The reviewed bottle was newly opened, and owned by my sister, who buys a lot of these young spirits. The wheat distillate used for 77 Whiskey is also used for Breuckelen Distilling Company's Glorious Gin. 77 Whiskey New York Wheat was formerly named "Black Wax"
Nose: pleasant, slightly spicy wheat aroma, a little floral, pears, a hint of honey, with a small 'hint' of sour. Nice
Taste: immediately very spicy, amazingly spicy for so little time in oak. I am amazed both by spice from wheat and by spice from oak. This will seem like too much spiciness for many people. Otherwise this is gentle in the mouth, and, like the nose, has a floral taste with both a bit of honey-sweet and a bit of sour
Finish: spice lingers long with the sweetness
Balance: this is amazingly spicy, so much so that it lacks balance. 77 Whiskey New York Wheat is very robust and interesting. It is a lot of fun to experience, even though it is unbalanced
