This young Bunnahabhain from 2007 was bottled by Robin Tuced and his Blackadder team in their famous Raw Cask series. It matured on a hogshead before being finish in a sherry cask. The ABV suggests that the spirit was not cut to the industry standard op 63.5% before being put in cask.
At first, I get butterscotch on the nose. Think Werther’s Original square. Once you get past that, you’ll find some tobacco leaves, freshly polished leather, furniture polish and milk chocolate. Hint of dried fruit. Nice smokiness, not in your face. I am a fan from the first whiff.
Despite the devilish ABV it is not really a kick to the teeth. At first it is a bit candy-like (caramel, chocolate with red fruit cream filling), but then leather, nutmeg, cloves, famer’s butter and dried fruit kicks in. At a certain point I even get the feeling of sipping a dry sherry, albeit on steroids.
The finish is long, smoky, dark and sweet and simply sublime. Walnuts at the death.
And to think that this is only ten years old. Craftmanship, I’d say. This is my 90th encounter with Bunna. Exceptional.
