Bunnahabhain 14 Year Old 1992 Anam na h-Alba

This softly peated Bunnahabhain was bottled by the German Anam na h-Alba for the third edition of Maltheads United last summer. This is a German whisky festival, comparable to Maltstock. The whisky was labeled Bunny’s Naughty Brother, whatever that means. The members of the club were able to purchase this for 49 EUR. We pay around 82 EUR, which is a bit steep in my book for a 14 year old whisky. Oh, well.

Despite the high ABV, the nose is very soft. The peat willingly moves over to allow the fruit the footlight. Lime, apple and pear. Some toffee, nougat with hazelnuts and vanilla accompany the fruit. Some elements like wet earth, light ashes, butane gas and a hint of olive oil. A smile spreads across my face.

It is creamy, very creamy. But what a powerful attack. Phew! All kinds of spices set your mouth aflame. The peat now kicks the fruit off stage and enters the spotlight like a real diva. Carefully the sweet notes return from backstage. Quite some ashes and even tar. Adding water hardly changes the profile, which is a big plus in this case. More bang for your buck!

The finish is long, sweet and smoky.

Ha, a wonderful profile that reminds me more of Ardbeg than Bunna. It wears water like Prada (say what?). Oh, lest I forget, the only place where you will find these Anam na h-Alba bottlings is at Dram 242. Dirk Verleysen is (at this moment) the sole distributor in Belgium.
