Wemyss recently opened their own distillery (Kingsbarns), but is mostly known as independent bottler in which the emphasis on the labels is not so much on the distillery as it is on the whisky in the bottle. The tasting panel gives every whisky a unique name. This 22 Year Old Bunna was christened ‘Seaweeds on the Rocks’.

The nose is surprisingly sweet. While I can paint a picture in my mind’s eye with ‘seaweeds on the rocks’ – I get some maritime elements – I am mostly surprised by honey, vanilla and pineapple cubes. Marmalate tart. Some freshly polished leather. A new sofa. And loads of apples. A basket full. It even evolves towards toffee apples. Hardly any smoke.

Good mouthfeel. Almost syrupy in fact. Wonderfully sweet on pineapple and vanilla, honey and some apple sauce. Bit of smoke. Tannins crop op quickly. I get spices like cardamom, white pepper and some candied ginger. Lemon juice. It becomes zesty. Midpalate it turns a bit dry.

The finish is long, but soft. It is bittersweet as if from grapefruit at the death.

This is the better stuff from Bunna. What a lovely cask. I would have called it 'Smoky Applesauce'.
