Bunnahabhain 32 Year Old 1976 The Queen of the Moorlands

The Queen of the Moorlands Whisky Company is a rather obscure bottler that has only brought single malts to the market since May 2004. They do this for their own committee members. This is one of them, a 32 Year Old Bunna, that matured on a sherry puncheon in warehouse number 4 at Bunnahabhain, close to the sea.

Boy, this is a very sweet nose, but with a wonderful coastal side to it, albeit somewhat hidden under the dark fruits. Dades and prunes, mostly that last, upholstered with mint and camphor. Some cough syrup. No, make that liquorice candy. Whiff of salt. Pretty complex.

It is slightly oily on the palate. Liquorice candy and liquorice tower over the caramel and the fruit. Rather clean (and I do like my Bunna dirty). It makes the transition from sweet to brine with the grace of a tightrope walker.

In the sweet finish, that is long and slightly drying towards the end, it is again nothing but liquorice candy that stays behind.

If this is the standard quality of the bottles from The Queen of the Moorlands, then it is easy to see why they have so many members. Devine stuff. Thanks to Whiskysamples, where you can still find it.
