I have tasted quite a few beauties from the Italian bottler Wilson & Morgan. Remember the fantastic Port Ellen 1982 or the great Caol Ila 1983? Two Bunna were also quite nice, especially the 1991. So am very much looking forward to trying this 38 Year Old, matured on a sherry cask with the magical number #1. It was put to sleep in 1973 and bottled last year.
A surprisingly sweet and fruity nose, that I would immediately not associate with Bunna. Totally devoid of peat or salt. What I get is a truckload of juicy tropical fruits like mango, sultana, black grapes, fresh figs, quince, a slice of kiwi and overripe banana. Licorice. Hints of chocolate and nuts. This is great!
It is rather soft, though spicy, with the added bonus of rosewater and heather honey to upholster the fruit. Hints of oak, working in a supporting role and certainly not dominating. Complex animal, but dangerously quaffable.
Despite the high age, the finish is juicy and fresh and the oak remains in the background. Superb!
One of the best, albeit somewhat atypical, Bunna I have tried to date. Recommended, but alas as good as gone.
