This is the oldest Bunna I have tried so far: no less than 42 years. It was distilled in 1968 and released as a joint bottling by the German Whisky Whisky-Fässle and the Dutch Whiskybase.
Ah, what a divine nose! A veritable fruit basket with apples, pears, banana, mango, pineapple and apricots. The whole is drenched in honey and very waxy. Light brown sugar and a hint of butterscotch. Even a drop of rum. The longer you leave it, the fruitier it becomes.
On the palate it is also waxy and fruity. The promise of the nose is kept. This does not always work for older Bunna, I feel, but here it does. Apples and pears in a frying pan, flambéed and sprinkled with saffron and cinnamon. The yellow fruit evolves into dark fruit. Sultanas become dades, apricots become figs. Amazing!
Only in the finish, which lasts long and is wonderfully fruity, is the oak discernable.
Without a doubt one of the best Bunna I have tried at this time. Still available from Whiskybase for approx. 205 EUR.
