Aceo Ltd is the company that took over Murray McDavid from Mark Reynier at the moment the Bruichladdich Distillery was sold off. They now release this 5 Year Old malt that listens to the name Smoky Scot and is very affordable: not even 40 EUR. They are happy to disclose that it’s a Caol Ila that matured on bourbon casks for five years.
The nose offers both sweet and salty notes with some woodsmoke. Baked apples and some oranges. Seaweeds and caramel. Liquorice. Simple, but very good.
That continiues nicely on the palate. Maritime notes with some tar, seaweeds and dark & sweet fruit. Very lively – well, it is quite young – and clean. The smoke becomes cozily grand. In that regard, it lives up to its name.
The finish may be somewhat short, nevertheless if offers up sweet malt and smoke that lingers, while at the death it gets a nice lift from mint.
A very nice and dirt cheap young Caol Ila. Recommended!
