At the festival of Independent Bottlers I took to A.D. Rattray samples, both single cask bottlings of Caperdonich. Sister casks, both put to sleep in 1992, both bottled in 2014 at cask strength. I will put them head-to-head, starting with this 20 Year Old, cask 121139.
Powerful nose on white fruit. Sour apples, but mostly pears. Hint of hay. Icing sugar. After a few moments, some furniture polish. Some candy as well. Then midly rotting wood, like what you find on the forrest floor right after a shower. I think this is nice. Adding water makes the nose more creamy, but changes little else.
It is very creamy on the palate, well-seasoned (ginger, liquorice, pepper) and wonderfully fruity. Quite a bit of citrus, upholstered with some white fruit. The apples are now louder than the pears. Loads of vanilla as well. Make that vanilla ice! With water, the fruit is more dominating as is the icing sugar.
The finish is fairly long on apples and vanilla with some woodsmoke at the death.
Not the most complex Caper, true, but very nice indeed. Around 92 EUR.
