I have very little experience with Craigellachie. I tasted their 13 and 17 YO expressions a few years back during Dewar’s Last Great Malts of Scotland theatrical production. I left unimpressed. This is an independent bottling. Decent age. Decent ABV. Let’s see how it tastes.
This expression is reviewed in a Highland whisky glass in my usual manner, allowing it to settle after which I take my nosing and tasting notes, followed by the addition of a few drops of water, waiting, then nosing and tasting.
Nose: 20/25
Fruity, something vegetal (cabbage?) that seems to overpower it as it gets more air. Not very complex. Water brings out the cabbage note more. (19/25)
Taste: 21/25
Spirity. Sweet. The vegetal note is there but not as prominent. Slightly effervescent. Pleasant. Water makes it more bitter. (18/25)
Finish: 20/25
Long finish. Fairly neutral. A little oaky. Bitter with water. (18/25)
Balance: 21/25
Drinkable, but forgettable. Adding water does this a disservice. (20/25)
Score: Neat - 82/100 With Water: 75/100
Would I buy this expression? No. Would I accept it is offered? If it was the only thing available and I was desperate for a dram…. likely not.
I wish I could be more positive, but I was not impressed.
