Another new one. Malts of Scotland has never before bottled a Fettercairn. I myself have only tasted two so far. Exciting! The Old Fettercairn distillery, built in 1824, is the property of United Spirits of the Indian Vijay Mallaya who purchased it, along with Whyte & Mackay, Jura and Dalmore, in 2007. Fettercairn has recently been repositioned as a luxury whisky.
The first whiff immediately takes me to a horse stable. Slightly sourish. Earty notes. Then immediately white fruit (sour apples and some pineapple – wait, that is yellow fruit, is it not?). Quite a bit of dried grass. Cashew nuts and even some cold coffee. Interesting. And this is not a euphemism. Hints of citrus and aniseed.
The attack is soft and beautiful. Oily, almost creamy. Yellow fruit, now. Moccha. Oak. Camphor and aniseed and a pinch of pepper. This is very nice, almost complex (which is not a prerequisite to be a good malt, of course). This does not need water. Do I get some peat, too? A bit smoky, to be sure.
On the finish, the smokiness is more pronounced. Medium long and well spiced. Sweet at the death.
This is a full Fettercairn, if you know what I mean. Around 100 EUR.
