It is time to get back to one off those big sherry bombs in the form of this Glendronach 1992 single Oloroso sherry Butt.. Cask #226 gave up only 554 bottles and was distilled 5th June 1992 and bottled September 2016 at a cask strength of 58.4% abv, this has no added colour.
Nose.. ( smiles ) Ok you know I’m happy.. First thing you notice is the intense dark fruit and molasses aromas, wood spices and dark chocolate notes.. Freshly ground coffee with the faintest hint off struck matches. Tobacco, old leather and sugared almonds coat orange peel, vanilla and maple syrup notes.. Palate.. Think Dunnage warehouse, earthy, fruity and spicy.. This is filled full of dates, sultanas, plums and marzipan notes. Dark chocolate, coffee and the darkest toffee you can imagine all bing this incredibly lavish flavour that just fills your mouth. Some very subtle oak manages to show up along with burnt caramel and a Bakewell tart flavour, cherry an all ….
Finish.. Big and bold with a hint of those struck matches..
Thoughts.. There are only so many times you want to write “wow” in your notes so instead I’ll just tell you I’m smiling right now ! .. I don’t very often pick up that “sulphur ” note but it is very evident in this but it really works well.. The boldness of those dried fruits and toffee flavours interweaving with the tobacco and spices really enhances those feelings you get when you have a great dram in your hands.. Lovely, complex dram.
