This Highland distillery was founded in 1875, closed for more than 40 years between 1908 and 1950 and produced primarily for blends like Teacher’s, Cutty Sark and the Famous Grouse. She closed again in 1986, until a Dutch energy giant, Scaent Group, suddenly put 5 million pounds on the table in 2009 to give her a new lease on life. Sutart Nickerson became the new manager. This is Glenglassaugh old school, bottled in 2000 under the label The Family Silver. I had tasted it before at a whisky dinner in May 2011, but gladly give it some more time now.

The nose is very aromatic with sweet vanilla, hints of banana and mirabelles (the yellow plums) and… please do not laugh… a freshly irond handkerchief. Pineapple cubes too. Very soft. It comes in layers. Now I suddenly get some nuts and coffee and mild spices. Even a tad of wood. Some heather. Becomes slightly floral. My, this is a rather pleasant and complex nose!

Pretty oily on the palate. Again very fruity. Some citrus, now. Oranges, mandarin. Honey and caramel join in. The spices are a bit louder now. Licquorice, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg. Fiery, despite the low ABV. A fresh touch of menthol. Quaffable, absolutely.

The finish is medium long with a sweet start, but end in a slight bitterness.

Fantastic Glenglassaugh. Thanks, Chris!
