Glentauchers 10 Year Old 2009 Asta Morris

I’ve heard people pronounce the name of this distillery in many different ways, but apparently ‘Glen-toch-ers’ is the only correct one. It was founded near Keith, in the heart of Speyside, in 1897 by James Buchanan, the man who would become world famous for his Black & White blend. Currently owned by Chivas, they use it for their own blends as well as Ballantine’s (together with Glenburgie and Miltonduff). It is obvious that Bert has a soft spot for this kind of malt, for this is already the fourth single cask that he releases from this distillery.

Wonderfully sweet and fruity nose, textbook example of a lovely sherry matured Speysider. I think it was a PX cask, as it sports many lovely notes of oranges, Sirop de Liège, cherries and beeswax. Apple sauce and baking butter. Hint of marzipan and just a few wood shavings. Vivacious is the least you can say about this malt. Very aromatic for such a young age.

Creamy, dark and sweet and almost candy-like on the palate. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Next to the sweet fruit (which keeps getting more red all the time, if you know what I mean), I also get a lovely bitterness as if from a grape pith and… err… Guinness? In the meantime, the apples evolve towards toffee apples. This is all about lovely sweetness. Sturdy dessert.

The finish could have been a bit longer in my book, but no way will it be a party pooper.

This is truly a great Glentauchers from a very active sherry cask. Especially if you keep in mind how young this malt is – truly impressive. One of my favorite AM-releases in recent months. Just under 70 EUR. Do not hesitate.
