Hazelburn is not a distillery, but a single malt that is produced by Springbank (that also creates, besides Springbank itself of course, the Longrow). The first release, dating back to only 2003, was limited to only 65 bottles for the shareholders and directors. If you can still find it, it will set you back about £1.000. But when you visit the distillery, you can also fill your own from a cask in the Tasting Room for a lot less money. Hazelburn distinguishes itself, because it is triple distilled.
The nose is aromatic and expressive, despite its softness. White and yellow fruit and some winegums. The sweetness does appear somewhat artificial. Some freshly cut grass, lime and pear.
The attack, soft and light on the spices, is almost watery. But now it is honeysweet, albeit again somewhat artificial, as if they added sweetener to it (which, of course, is ludicrous). Caramel and canned peaches.
The long finish offers mostly sweetness and spices.
This is a nice aperitif whisky, but a pity of the artificial sweetness. Thanks to my buddy Jan VC for the sample.
