How often do you drink whisky?

Every day? Just over a weekend? On a holidays? How much? Don't you think you drink too much / too little? What about other alcohol drinks?

About a year ago I think there was a thread like this if you want to go digging around for it...

I have forced myself down to just Friday and Saturday night for whisky (plus special occasions). Those nights I can have a big pour without feeling guilty (~2.5 oz usually). Other nights I might drink one beer. I've found that more whisky consumption than that just makes me too focused on it, and probably would be too much to drink anyway. I would love to be able to drink more whisky, but as the Stones say "you can't always get what you want."

I would say a few times a week and then it's only a few drams at most. Drink and Enjoy Responsibly

Three nights per week, three drams per night. Occasionally four in both categories. Ratio of about three Scotch nights to one bourbon night.

I don't think I drink too much because I'm too afraid of it becoming a problem. I drank way too much (beer) when I was in my 20s, then became a very occasional social drinker for about 30 years. I'm actually grateful for discovering whisky, as it's taught me to enjoy spirits without any great desire to get drunk. Oh, I may be a little tipply at the end of a tasting evening, but...y'know...;)

I don't drink too much beer any more, unless somebody's got a keg at a summer barbecue. Not much of a wine drinker, unless somebody else is choosing and buying. If I want something cool and refreshing while cooking or lounging on the patio in the summer, I'll have a little Hendrick's Gin and tonic.

Some beer on the weekends and whiskey 4-5 times per week. Average pour is about 1.5 oz.

For me it's when ever I feel like it. I find whisky taste changes dramatically with my mood (crazy?) I might drink 2-3 times weekly or other times once in 2-3 weeks. I have bottles sitting around open for 4 years now.... Then it's when friends come over and always when going out (once or twice a month). No rules - just enjoyment!!!

On average, about five times a week, and never to excess! I'll usually have a dram of something like a sherry or port finished whisky, and late in the evening I'll have a dram of something smoky and/or peaty.

Generally if I have a whisky in the day it's just one dram, at least on evenings where I work the next day. Weekends it might be two or three drams, or it might be nothing. Just depends on how I feel. I run an imported craft beer shop so beer is a fairly large portion of my life, but even then honestly maybe 1 to 2 beers a week as very few beers hold my attention to the point where I desire a six pack.

However once a month or so I will do a whisky club tasting at which point I might have up to 8 or 9 drams, but that would be over the course of 5 or 6 hours with lots of food and water and never to the point where I'm drunk.

I honestly don't find much pleasure in getting drunk and especially when you're dealing with really nice whiskies and beers I personally find that if I'm getting drunk, my pleasure with the whisky or beer is greatly diminished. That's not to say that I never get tipsy, just that anything beyond that for me tends to me an area I don't care to go ;)

I vary, I tend to go through phases as I agree with @valuewhisky, if I drink every day I focus on it too much. Recently I have been drinking 4 times a week usually 2 or 3 drams a night. Then I might go a few weeks or so where I only drink once a week or not at all. I guess on average over a year I average twice a week.

In Osaka right now with the family, sitting in the hotel room after a great day of sightseeing and well on my way to getting my drink on! These days I usually drink about 2 or 3 times a month, sometimes more, sometimes less.

I certainly enjoy finishing at one dram sometimes but I also love taking it to the next level... Very much!! And I make no apologies for it ; )

@CanadianNinja: I have an antique glass measure that has graduations for several systems of measurement, among them drams. 1/2fl. dram is 2 1/2fl. ounces and for me a good pour which I have most nights with Malt Whisky. For me this is a generous pour! Very ocassionally I'll have another; sometimes a half, if the Malt is a bit special.

Slainte.

Interesting @A'bunadhman. I didn't know that a dram had a specific volume value. At 5fl.oz. a full dram is quite a substantial pour. I usually pour about 11/2 fl. oz.. so 2 of those would still not be much more than a 1/2 dram. I am going to try to confine myself to weekends only, I felt I was becoming a bit too habituated to my daily drams last year when every day at about 5:00pm I would start craving some whisky. It is a very easy habit to aquire, and with the whisky in conjunction with wine every night at dinner and a few ales thrown in here and there, I was putting on weight, getting a bit lazy, and mixing the grape and the grain was giving me a thick head quite often. So I haven't had any alcohol since New Year's day and plan to ease back in next week when we are in Mexico.

I pour every day; from one to three drams ( three dram evenings being more for the weekend ) which are usually, between half an ounce to one and a half. These aren't big drams and I don't drink wine with dinner. - every night. Any of these pours can be Cognac, brandy, or gin too; but whisky is my main spirit.

One dram per day on average (2 ounces). More when I'm depressed, disgusted with things in the world, such as Obama's speeches (like the one tonight), or depressed and disgusted with Obama's speeches (and that's saying something because I'm a life long democrat even though I refused to vote for president in the last election because there was nobody worth voting for, and I believe that not voting is a vote for democracy in a country that is so patently undemocratic these days). I also drink more than 2 ounces when I'm hanging out with friends. More when I'm at a bar. 70% of what I drink is single malt scotch. Then wine, then beer. I never drink before noon and I don't read suggestions for "breakfast scotches."

Living in the Pacific Northwest, I am surrounded by skunky bitter overhopped beer that everyone thinks is delicious. That makes me want to drink scotch. If I'm in a bar or pub that sells British or German style beer, I will order beer because I really do like delicious beer, but it's hard to come by here where I live. Most of the "craft" brews are shite.

Too much of a good thing is bad. In this case, I'm referring to hops. This said, I do like sherry bombs when it comes to scotch. I also like peaty beasties. I'm really sad that I'm almost through the last bit of my bottle of Tobermory 15. Yes, it is over the top, with huge waves of sherry that explode on the tongue, but it's soooooo goooooood.

@rigmorole, lucky we are indeed my friend, that we can simply be 'depressed or disgusted'. Many others don't have that luxury... they need to be more concerned about when the next drone will fly overhead...

Back to whisky though, I've heard several different measurements regarding what a dram actually is. However personally, when I use this word I'm generally referring to a decent pour along the lines of what you may see Ralfy use during a review.

3-4 times/week for me as well. Usually 1 pour up to the thickest part of the glencairn glass, and then sometimes a second pour of about half that, but not always.

Weekends only generally, but I have periods where I drink a small measure of whisky everyday. I tend to serve very short pours compared to a lot of people though. A standard 750ml bottle can have from 25 to 30 pours for me. The guidelines to "safe" drinking in Canada are 3 servings for men maximum in day and no more than 15 servings in a week. I'm way below that.

Beer I drink more often in the spring/summer. Apart from bourbon or cocktails, very little whisk(e)y gets drunk during the summer months at my place.

I usually drink scotch on the weekend, but if it is a stressful week, I might pour a dram or two during the week. When consuming, I usually pour two or three 1.5 - 2 oz pours (free pour). By the end of the evening I am usually very relaxed, not wasted, and I sleep like a baby! Best medicine! I also like the occasional snifter of brandy (cognac, armagnac, grappa, etc.) Sometimes I will drink a beer before a session. Depending on my mood. I generally don't drink much whisky in the summer months when it gets too hot. For those hot days, I generally stick to beer, wine, or port.

Same as @Donski for me - a small pour 4-5 nights per week currently. Sometimes I'll go a couple weeks without a sip, but lately it's been probably every second night or so. I usually only have one small pour and call it.

Other nights I'll often have a beer. I usually only have one drink a night, but I rarely miss a night.

For me, the answer is simple: whenever I feel like it. In the real world, that works out to about 4 or 5 times a week, though I rarely pour more than one 1.5oz measure. Sometimes I have a scotch and then a bourbon afterwards, but I usually stick to just the one. I find that when I have more, I don't appreciate it as much, and even a drop that goes unappreciated is something I abhor and try to avoid. ;)

My habits change from time to time though. Sometimes I go weeks or even a month or two between drams. I'm just a fickle sort, I suppose, even though I consider myself a real enthusiast.

I can occasionally drink whisky every day but usually 5 nights a week, sometimes less.

I think having at least a day or two off is good for the liver and makes me enjoy a dram more when I come back to it. I also keep my measures small (25 ml apx) and in the week rarely have more than two which is less alcohol than a bottle of 5% beer.

It's funny though; last night I poured a Te Bhaeg after a rough day, had a sip, and decided that I wasn't in the mood so poured it back. Also, if my taste buds are a bit off and/or my heartburn is playing up I'll just lay off. The annoying part is that sometimes on a Monday evening an hour or so before bed I seem to have the nose of old 'Dicky' Patterson and the taste buds of Ralfy yet some weekends I just don't feel 'up for it'. Such is life.

I do worry that I drink too much (well too often, really) so a while ago made a record of what I drank in a week. It was less than half a bottle (70ml) and as I rarely drink any other liquor bar the odd beer/ale I think that's within safe limits; albeit a somewhat committed amount!

I'd be concerned if I was going through a bottle or more in a week though.
