I have never before tried an Inchgower! And now the opportunity arises to try no less than 4. They were all distilled on 30th June 1982 and released by three different bottlers. Let me start with two by Bladnoch Forum, this first one bottled on 12th July 2010.
Grass, flowers, hay, potpourri. That is the nose of this Inchgower in a nutshell. Lemongrass! Then some apple peelings, kirsch and a wonderful trace of smoke. A touch alcoholic. Adding water makes it somewhat sweeter (dark sugar?) and more creamy. A bit of coconut milk, in fact. This one is off to a very good start.
Nicely oily, but rather sharp on the spices. Ginger, pepper and even some curry. Big oak, too. Grapefruit. Tastes like salty plum liqueur. This does not exist of course. Nice balance between sweet and bitter and even salt. Quite complex. And wonderful.
The finish is long with a lot of oak and a quite a bit of kitchen salt.
Attractive Speysider that surprised me in a positive way. It does need a bit of water though. It becomes the whisky. You can still find this for around 130 EUR (which is dirt cheap for this big guy, although it originally sold for half that).
