Isle of Jura 10 Year Old

Crap, bad timing! I just had a birthday lunch with my co-workers today and they gave me this bottle... Darn! Oh, well. At least, like you, I didn't pay for it...

Absolutely, hands-down worst whisky I've ever tried. It does have an off nose, but also a very medicinal taste and an odd salty aftertaste. I bought a bottle and couldn't drink it, so I gave it to a friend, who had a similar reaction. The bottle is now something of a running joke -- the challenge is to find some newbie to take the bottle. Jura is only about 3 miles off the coast of Islay, but the whisky is light years away.

I've not tried Jura 10 but I quite liked Jura Superstition.

Great great review! I also liked Superstition. A little thinnish (does that exist?) on the palate, certainly a light body. At the same time very delicate. Since my buddy (brother-in-law) Jonas and me went to Islay, Jura Superstition is on our wishlist. Some of the review I recognise out of the Jura Superstition. But it's better. Hopefully we all get to drink a top class Jura one day, 'cause it's a sympathetic distillery and island. A Jura is certainly not bugger. Furthermore, I wonder if the stench you smelled had something to do with sulphured casks.

My initial tasting of Jura 10yr was not great. However, I felt compelled to try it again, as I (unlike some of you) actually bought my own bottle! When I tried it the second time, I realized it was not as dull as I first thought. In fact, I rather liked the spicy finish. The saltiness wasn't harsh, and it wasn't a peat monster like its Islay cousins.

For a nice glass of whisky that doesn't bowl you over, and gives you something there at the end, I rather enjoy Jura! It is not the first thing I reach for in my liquor cabinet, but nor is it the last. The price point is very attractive, which makes it one I reach for perhaps on my second trip, or on occasion my third!

I just tried this Jura 10 Year Old and was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Probably because I wasn't expecting much because of the above review. @richardpaterson: will do!

I bought this because it was offer on tesco and I have to say it's quite nice. The review does not do it justice and would have stopped me buying it if it was full price.

I'd like to try others in the range now. Any suggestions?

Well I just ordered some Superstition today, and because of these reviews, I'm mostly glad I didn't also get the 10-yr. But, because there seem to be mixed comments, and not knowing your experience, I would helpfully replay to the original anonymous reviewer as follows: try adding a bit of water, and let the pour sit for several minutes; be aware of what you ate before your sampling; try it again a couple more times before posting a review (some of my own sampling notes tend to contradict each other).

I like the Jura 10yo - up until the bottling from 2007. All the more recent bottlings I have tried have less body to them, and the ones from 2009 so far have been a disappointment. Very sad.

My experience with the Isle of Jura 10 yr has unfortunately been similar to the reviewer's, harsh and unpleasant in almost every respect. It is good to get a dram from a friend or a bar so that one does not have to invest in a bottle of every whisky that one would like to try.

The review is totally off the wall. I recently had a free tasting of the 43% Jura 10 year and liked it enough, especially at the discounted event price of $35 to pick up a bottle. Not the greatest I've ever had, but certainly way more than acceptable.

Since my last comment, I have tasted a lot of Jura 10yo. The recent batches (2012, 2013) are a lot better again. The whisky has changed a lot though, it comes down to personal preference if you like the pre-2008 or post-2011 versions better. Inbetween those years, there were a few pretty bad bottlings.
