Isle of Jura 3 Year Old 1999 Matthew Forrest Collection

There is not a lot of information to be found about Matthew D Forrest. It would seem it was a bottler that operated in Japan. Some sources say the man was born on 28 October 1939 and passed away at the age of 65 on 5 May 2005. He bottled quite a few nice whiskies, including two Hanyu. But also a Highland Park 1973. What I am tasting today is an especially young Isle of Jura. Only three years old! Who would bottle such a young animal, unless it is really exceptional?

Whoa! This nose is quite something – for a Jura in any case. Heavily peated, making me think of Ledaig at first. Smoked fish, finger paint and greasy coals, before the sweet fruit kicks in. That translates into caramelized apple, pears drenched in honey and hints of peach. Quite some mint, too. After a few moments even some coffee. This is very special indeed.

Despite the high ABV, it is perfectly smooth and creamy on the palate. Spicy without being sharp. Sweetaer than on the nose, with a lot of toffee. The fruit fades gently. Midpalate, the sweet peat rears its head, making it smoky and briny.

Long, warm finish.

What a taste experience! Exceptional cask, indeed! No wonder it was bottled at this young age. There is also a 28 Year Old Jura bottled by Forrest.
