So far I have only written tasting notes for one bottling of J&B – and with good reason. This brand is often jokingly dubbed Junk & Bullshit. It is more a blend to mix with at a student party then something to enjoy in front of the hearth. Hence no tasting notes on this brand. But… for the J&B Exception I will gladly make… an exception. It is not dirt cheap – around 30 EUR – but then again it contains only single malts (most of them from the Speyside) – that matured for at least 12 years. Let us give it a go.
Pleasant nose on young apples and other white fruit, some vanilla and camphor. Apfelstrudel, raisins included. Some baking powder and spices. Even some curry. Not bad. Easy, but not bad.
The body is a bit lacking, but it is quite tasteful. Nice continuation of the nose, with an added helping of maple syrup and some acacia honey. Soft development of spices with some pepper and ginger. A little wood.
The finish is medium long, spicy and sweet and leaves the mouth rather dry.
A nice surprise. Do not expect a grand whisky, but a pleasant en tasty dram for a night in front of the telly or at a game board.
