For Feis Ile 2018 Kilchoman vatted 4 bourbon barrels, which resulted in a limited release of 744 bottles which sold out in a flash. Thanks to the Whisky Amigos (Belgian friends) I was able to get one. It was the oldest Kilchoman on the market with its 11 years old age. Distilled in March 2007 and bottled in May 2018. Let’s get to it!
The nose starts somewhat restrained on barley sugar and vanilla, a fresh leaf of mint and some green banana. Just a little bit of peat smoke. Soft, but very pleasant.
Ha! What a sneaky bastard! On the palate, it’s an explosion of peat smoke and lots of spices (ginger, white pepper, vanilla) with the fruit in the background. Apples, lemons (peel included) and some almonds. A very clean textbook example of this young distillery.
The finish, medium to long, adds a salty note. At the death, mint returns for just a little while.
Very clean and lovely Kilchoman. Goes back to base of this distillery, I think, and that makes it very attractive.
