The Lagavulin Distillers Edition is – just like it’s brethren – double matured. In case of Lagavulin, this is on Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. This is the release from 2015.
While the classic Lagavulin traits are there, they have to make room fors weet and soft elements like blood oranges, raisins and dades, some nuts (almonds?), broth and cigar box. Some smoked meat. You will be forgiven for calling this complex and intriguing.
It is truly silky soft and simply marvelous on the palate. Again loads of fruit like oranges, raisins and lemons, but also smoked deer on the BBQ (no joke), charcoal, salt, liquorice and tar. The smoke is warm, though not dominant. Like I said: intriguing.
The long finish leaves the mouth parched, after it first allows the dark and sweet elements to return once more.
Surprisingly sweet, complex and simply delicious Lagavulin. This is the sixth Distillers Edition from Lagavulin that I have tried and the best so far.

Thanks for the review. I finished a bottle of this about a month ago and I was sad to see it go. It was probably my favourite malt, but my recently opened Uigeadail surpasses it in every way. I was more generous with my final mark than you, but perhaps my soft spot for Lagavulin can account for the discrepancy.
