This is the 2017 edition of the cask strength Lagavulin 12-year old, a regular feature of Diageo’s yearly special releases.

The nose is malty, phenolic and lightly sooty. Notes of brine and cardboard come first, followed by lemon flavours, and that’s how far it goes with regard to fruity notes. Quite dry and a bit austere.

The palate is medium-bodied, a little bit spicy and rather smooth (belying the high ABV). Sooty, salty, phenolic, and the lemons are back too. Superbly balanced.

The finish is long, ashy and rather dry. Lemon flavours last to the very end.

Not a lot to say here - this is another brilliant 12-year old Lagavulin. They hardly ever disappoint. @Lagavulin 12 year-old, thou art beautiful!

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago but haven't cracked it yet.

The Laga 12 is my favourite Lagavulin. The price increases have been insane though. The 2018 release is £110 a bottle in the UK

Yep, they are all good, even that one which was less well-received, what was it, 2013, I think.

Thanks much, @Pierre_W. It is well that we continue to document the ongoing releases of old favourites.

@Victor I think it was the 2014 that didn't stand up well against the 2011 at least when I tried them H2H.

@Wierdo If anyone happens to pass by Greece... for some odd reasons, the Laga 12 is a lot cheaper there, I picked up one last week for €73 - about £60. Haven't opened it yet, but recently tried a club bottling which I think was a laga CS and it was... intense! :)

If I ‘happen’ to pass by Greece on my way to work....

@Nozinan that may have been the 2014 release which caused many to conclude that Lagavulin 12 and Lagavulin in general was going to the dogs. It was a temporary drop off in quality, fortunately. And many didn't think the 2014 Lagavuliin 12 yo to be bad at all, only not up to the standards of 2010 and 2011. I had some of that 2014. It was good, but it wasn't anywhere near the quality of the 2010 release. Everyone raves about the 2011 Lagavulin 12 yo. I haven't tasted it yet, but I have owned a bottle of it ever since it was first released.

@Victor Are you saying the 2010 release was exceptionally good? I happen to have bottle of it.

@Nozinan Yes, 2010 release Lagavulin 12 yo is excellent. But I will take it off your hands if you have doubts.

I think that in the Connosr original Top 10 Rated list, before it became a Top 50 Rated list, and then a Top 100 Rated list (those expansions at my prodding, or suggestion) that this very 2010 release Lagavulin 12 yo was in that top 10 rated whiskies. # 4 or # 5 if I recall. .

@Victor You would take it off my hands?

YOU would do that for ME?

Folks, how many people out there are so selfless?

I appreciate the sentiment. If I ever need to unload some bottles I will know who to contact... wink

Oh, I'd pay for the bottle of course, though not at LCBO prices.

@Victor @Nozinan as I said... I recommend the greek price. And like this, victor doesn’t event have to happen to pass by Greece laughing

@Victor when I got that bottle, the price was a lot lower...

I got a friend in London Ontario to get me one of the last remaining bottles at the LCBO. Then he refused to take money for it.

@Nozinan that is a good friend.

Even current LCBO prices (adjusted for currency conversion) are only modestly higher than our current local prices for Lagavulin 12 in this metro area.

@Nozinan I was thinking the same haha. Beautiful country but I've never happened to pass by. Is there economy still hanging by a thin rope that was thrown by the Germans?
