Thanks to my good friend Chris Lauriers – whisky ambassador for Belgium – I have the opportunity to try no less than 10 – ten! – Feis Ile bottlings from Laphroaig in a row from 2007 until 2016. This is going to be a trip to remember.
This is the 2012 release that was named ‘Origin’. You will notice that the number of bottles has increased spectacularly in comparison with previous bottlings. It is clear that whisky tourism – especially Feis Ile – is more popular than ever. Sweet and fruity nose on lime and apricots, cherries and banana. Wood shavings. Crème brûlée, rosemary. The whole is obviously wrapped in a smoky blanket of sweet peat. Oh, how beautiful Laffie can be at times… It is mildly drying, smoky and complex on the palate. I get tannins, lime, pepper and nuts but also some citrus, ginger, salt, green herbs and… more salt. Yes, from the second sip on it becomes salty seawater! Apparently there is also a lost apricot in there somewhere...
The finish is long, dry and smoky with more oranges and play-doh at the death.
OMFG! What a delicious Laffie indeed.
