Laphroaig Four Oak

I tasted the Laphroaig Four Oak a few years ago and remember not being really devastated at the time. Now my buddy Pat puts a sample of a recent bottling in my hands, so I think it would be good to give it another try. The Four Oak of course refers to the four cask types that were used: ex-bourbon, American Virgin Oak, European oak and Quarter Casks. The typical aromatic peat is no match here for notes of chocolate, smoked ham and a lot of wood notes. I smell the oak especially. Roasted or toasted, I don't care, it's mostly oak. I wasn't exactly waiting for that. The body is very light, almost watery. Also, on the palate I get a lot of woody notes. Molded and somewhat caramelized, licorice and freshly sawn boards. Then there is something of raisins and chocolate, but also a few drops of olive oil and grapefruit juice. Ahses at the end. The finish is very short on ashes and wood. I'm still not devastated. Perhaps one of the least interesting Laffies I have been able to put on my lips. Still… thx, Pat!
