Had to buy this cheap blend because of the Islay influence, Laphroaig malt has been used in the making. Also some Speyside content is present.
This isn't as bad as I thought it would be, surprisingly tasty for its kind. I think the malt percentage is high. But the Islay feel isn't big, like my title suggests. More like an Island feel.
Nose: Promising start with coastal notes. Salty, seafood mixed with air breeze. Some grainy notes and Speyside sweetness. Vanilla and creamy toffee.
Taste: Sweet, very light and bit watery. Speyside is there surely. Malt dominates more than the grains.
Finish: Sea salt and spices, some medicinal notes and sour notes. Even in the finish the grains don’t show that much – which makes this delicate blend a good one in my book.
Balance: Not the most balanced one but nicely malty side. With more character it would rank higher. Still, a good score from me, when thinking about blends.
@Rantavahti, thanks for your review.
I am very curious to try these various Islay Mist products. Jim Murray describes the Islay Mist Deluxe Blend "remains a highly unusual blend". I really like the 8 yo version, much more than I expected I would, and it is stunningly inexpensive here right now.
Even at a steal of a price ($ 12, right now, after a rebate)I just can't see myself drinking "Laphroaig Light" often in preference to any bottling of bona fide Laphroaig. But if I could not get Laphroaig, there is no question that I would drink the Islay Mist 8 yo. If I saw it at a bar at an event and there were no malts available I would be very pleased indeed to be able to drink it.
And I would choose Islay Mist 8 yo any day of the week in preference to standard White Horse blended Scotch, which is "Lagavulin Light".
