Gold Mine

Gruvguld is Swedish for ‘gold from the mine’, which is of course a reference to the Bodas mine in which Mackmyra matures here whisky – at a depth of 50 meters, by the way. It is a marriage of 3 types of casks: 30 liter, 100 liter and 128 liter. While most of the whisky is unpeated, a few peated casks were added as well as a few casks that previously held oloroso and PX sherry. But the majority of this release is unpeated whisky that matured on the small 30 liter casks.
Sweet summery nose on blood oranges, toffee, chestnut with some coriander and vanilla. A hint of sniffing tobacco and some candied sugar. Mocha and dried apricots. Very accessibly, fairly straightforward but very inviting nonetheless.
Fairly piquant on the palate. Loads of allspice, ginger and liquorice, coriander and something that reminds me of juniper berries. Soft smokiness. The fruit translates mostly into blueberries, pears, blood oranges and apricots. A lot feistier than the nose promised.
The medium long finish is spicy warm.
My 20th Mackmyra. Around 50 EUR, which is a bargain in my book. Recommended.
