The Master Blender of Mackmyra, Angela D’Orazio, regularly discovers single casks in her Bodas Mine (where they matured in a constant temperature) that jump out to her. Being so exceptional, she does not want to use those in the general releases. The Mackmyra Moment series was born: a marriage of exceptionally good casks. Take this Prestige, for example, of which the youngest cask in the mix is 11 years old. All of the casks used came from the champagne producer Philipponnats.
Nice, bright and herbal nose on green grapes, white pepper and some vanilla custard. Surprisingly fresh, but with a creamy edge. Reminds me somewhat of sabayon. Spice-wise it’s all about white pepper and ginger, but it also offers some green herbs. Cardamom and some aniseed too. Leave it to breath for a while and it will become sweeter.
The grapes and aniseed arrive first on the palate (it’s almost white wine on steroids), followed quickly by pepper and eucalyptus. Slowly some citrus notes emerge with grapefruit in the lead. Mildly drying.
This continue snit he medium long finish, leaving the mouth completely dry.
Intriguing whisky. And yes, you can almost taste the champagne. Around 130 EUR.
