At last it has arrived: the official ten year old single malt from Mackmyra. This Swedish single malt was composed with whisky that matured on bourbon and oloroso casks and new American oak. It was put together by Master Blender Angela D’Orazio. Only 20.000 bottles were created, of which 12.000 are destined for the Swedish market. The rest of the world will have to make do with the remaining 8.000 bottles.
Oh, my, the first whiff reminds me immediately of a dusty attic. Or furniture in an antiques store. Then the fruity notes kick in. I get some apples, pears, strawberries and raspberries, but also coconut, sultanas and something that reminds me of chocolate, but... not quite. There is a floral touch in the background as if from parma violets. All in all, this makes for a lovely nose with integrated aromas.
The mouthfeel is more than ok. Nicely oily. The fruit returns from the start (with the white fruit in the lead, followed closely by red notes), but is immediately overpowered by the spices. It is a mix of peppers, some nutmeg and bakery spices. It works like a charm and gives the malt depth and complexity.
The finish is not overly long, but does remain warm due to the spices. The fruit lingers nicely.
Beautiful Swede, although not my favorite Mackmyra (that is still the Vinterrök). But definitely a nice composition brining the different casks together in an integrated whole. Thanks to Mackmyra for the miniature.
This has sure been a long time coming! Finally an age statement. I'm not a big fan of Mackmyra but I guess I'll have to try this one. Thanks for the review.
