Michter's Distillery was already founded in 1753 and therefore one of America’s first distilleries. It changed its name along the way to Bomberger Distillery, albeit for a short while. The current buildings, that were erected in 1840, are listed on the National List of Historic Places sinds 1975. But since 1989, they are no longer in use, as the distillery went bankrupt. But with the new increased demand for bourbon, the distillery has been revived, albeit in another location. A completely new distillery with the Michter’s name, was built in Shively, Kentucky. This is their 10 year old single barrel bourbon.
The nose is sweet and grainy as if I have just buttered a slice of dark bread with honey and maple syrup and topped it off with a couple of cherries. Some leather, chocolate, beeswax and dried grass. Candied oranges. Toffee apples. Tobacco leaves. This is quite complex and simply outstanding.
It could have done with a little more body, but luckily it is not watery. In fact, the palate is lovely. Round and sweet on cherries, orange marmalade, toffee and some nice spices. It even reminds me a bit of hummus, imagine that!
The cherries continue to dominate in the finish. Make that maraschino. And black pepper.
Very enjoyable, but incredibly hard to find bottling from Michter’s. The brand is slowly becoming something of a cult bourbon and I can see why. Thanks for the sample, PROOF!
