I love my Mortlach's and thought I would give this rare Douglas and Laing bottling a try. Actually distilled in 1989 and bottled in 2008 (officially 19yo) making it at opening today a fine 23 years old.
Non Chill-filtered and no added colouring, this bottling is a single cask offering finished in a Rhone wine cask producing 369 bottles at 50% abv
A lovely deep ruby-red colour that looks like the Macallan cask strength. I've tried this with water and without and for sure it's better straight and left for half an hour to open up. On the nose I'm finding rich fruit, walnuts, moss, pollen, barley and what I can only describe as Chanel No 5, and a hint of flint and sea-salt.
The arrival is blackberry and bitter chocolate with chili ginger and barbecued spices finished with a long coco chocolate tang.
Not a particularly smooth offering but beautifully spicy and engaging.
