Sazerac Straight Rye 18 Year Old Whiskey (Fall 2009)

The Sazerac 18 forms, together with the Eagle Rare 17, George T Stagg, William Larue Weller and Thomas H Handy, the so-called Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Just like the Eagle Rare and contrary to the other three, it is bottled at a drinking strength of 45% ABV or 90 proof. Being a Rye Whiskey, rye is the prime ingredient.

The nose is rather floral at first. Violets and daffodils. Even some dandelion. Then some very dark bread emerges, as do honey and dark fruit. Caramelized apple. Cinnamon and a hint of black pepper. Cherry liqueur. Hint of butter. Rather soft.

It is both mildly oily and spicy on the palate. All kinds of pepper from the rye. Despite the rather modest ABV, it does pack quite a punch. Sweet on apples with some tobacco and leather in the mix. Then suddenly coffee and chicory. Mildly bitter towards the end.

The medium long finish offers a hint of coconut.

This one does not need water in my opinion, but what a lovely rye indeed. Taken as a whole, this Antique Collection is indeed a glorious one with nothing but top notch liquid.

When I read that Jim Murray had given the title 2010 World Whisky of the Year to an American Rye Whiskey I was somewhat bemused. So much so, I went out and bought a bottle. Not of the Fall 2008 but the Fall 2009.

It's now early Ocotber 2010 and the bottle is half full and I feel more confident now about giving this complicated whiskey a just review.

This is the first non Scottish whisky I have drank and it's been a very pleasant experiance.

The Nose: is boiled sweets like pear drops, very fragrant and herbal with mint, fruity too with maybe a cherry richness, but there is also wood and tobacco maybe an old leather sofa, very complex in deed.

The Palate: is an onslaught of lively refreshing rich sweet fruit giving way to toffee and mint, turning bitter, now sour fruits, lemons, cinnamon, tannins,

The Finish: is medium to long, warming with red fruits ending with sweet cinnamon.

I don't drink this often, at £90 a bottle can you blame me. But when I do it leaves me feeling good.

Out of all the American whiskeys this and Stranahan's Colarado have taken my fancy the most.

In 2009, Jim Murray published his 2010 whisky bible, in which he named the Sazerac Rye 18yo (2008 Fall edition) best whisky in the world.

This is the 2009 fall edition (the one after the 2008 edition which was 2010's best whisky (in 2009)), and we're going to see how it tastes. In 2009.

...Still with me?...

Nose - Incredibly powerful sweet rye, and delicious cinnamon-dusted french-toast. Maraschino Cherry, followed by a huge wallop of Oak. A Touch of iodine perhaps? Coconut makes an appearance right at the end.

Palate - Astringency initially, but this soon gives way to an astonishing wave of over-ripe banana.

Finish - Continuing complexity builds to a massive fanfare with Cola nut, and hazelnut latte amongst the more discernable flacours.

Overall - Massive, complex, and very, very grown-up. This is a 26 minute long rock opera of a Rye in comparison to others' 3 1/2 minute pop tracks.

Well said benellefsen. I have this bottling as well and have a new favorite in the world of fine spirits. It was a real struggle getting a bottle of this in our area(much less two!) I simply cannot believe that the Rye whiskies have come this far in development. I prefer it to the Pappy 20 yr, a Bourbon, but it has some competition with the Jefferson 17 yr Presidential Select, a wheat whiskey. Fine stuff indeed!

I think the taster has his nose and palate the wrong way round...the nose is astringency, meaning sour and almost like paint stripper, however the palate is sweet, cherries and that big oak...it is after all from a white oak barrel. Taste and see, he has mixed up his tasting notes..a lovely drop of whiskey.
