Early December I hosted a sold-out Talisker tasting in the Rolf Benz Lounge of the Ghelamco Arena, home to the AA Gent soccer team. I am happy to share my personal notes on the line-up and will start with this Distillers Edition from 2016. Thanks to the finish in an Amoroso sherry cask, it has a nice bronze color.
Wonderful nose in which sweet and salt go head to head. Sweet BBQ sauce, candied orange peel, milk chocolate and lots of honey in the left corner, while walnuts, a bonfire, salted bacon and pickles warm up in the right corner.
Surprisingly creamy body (well, Amoroso is a cream sherry) that starts off very sweet, but immediately becomes brackish with a beautiful development of smoke. Wow! Pepper, sniffing tobacco, cloves, caramel, Seville oranges, green grapes and brackish water. Oh, how it works!
The finish is wonderfully long while the smoke fades away gently, leaving charcoal and candied oranges.
What a beautiful Talisker. Smoky dessert and I love it! Not even 60 EUR? No brainer.
