The boys of The Nectar, a Belgian bottler, put a couple of whiskies on the market icognito – without mentioning the distillery on the label – under the well chosen name ‘Undercover’. Their Number 2 only exists in 82 bottles and contains a 24 Year Old Talisker. How do I know it’s Talisker? Well, the label says ‘distilled on Skye’. No rocket science.
Ooh, now that is a very sweet nose, with vanilla, Italian espresso with only a pinch of peat and a few drops of seawater. Some tobacco and almonds. Spicy, but the whole remains soft, despite the high ABV. This is a very pleasant surprise.
Very gentle arrival, too, and very fruity. Oh, my, this is sweet and rather atypical for Talisker, I think. The peat is there, as are the signature salt and pepper, but it’s the sweet fruit that shines here. Some bitter chocolate towards the end.
Pepper rears its head again in the long finish. It makes me – literally – all warm inside.
A wonderful, but rather atypical and hence very interesting, Talisker!
