The Macphail's Collection contains young whisky, 8 years old each time, but at a very affordable price. The same can be said for this Tamdhu. I have heard that Gordon & Macphail purchase the new make spirit directly at the distillery and then matured it on their own casks in their warehouses in Elgin.
The nose is young and freshly fruity on green apples, oranges and sultanas. A hint of dark chocolate, a lot of vanilla and some maple syrup. It becomes very sweet. Malty as well. Slowly but surely a green edge develops. Ferns and pine cones.
It is surprisingly powerful and somewhat alcoholic. A brawl between sweet and sour ensues. The sweetness of the fruit versus the sour notes from the sherry. Loads of tannins, though, making it less soft than it should be.
The tannins and green notes come out in force for a bitter, medium long finish.
A young sherry matured Speysider that you can buy for around 30 EUR. Not complex, but nothing wrong with it either.
