My big sister has done many wonderful things for my whisk(e)y and spirits education, including giving me many wonderful whisk(e)y presents, and letting me sample from her extensive collection of both bizarre and conventional whiskies and other spirits. I was absolutely delighted, when, a little over a year ago, she let me taste her recently purchased bottles of Tomatin 12, Tomatin 15, and Tomatin 15 Tempranillo Finish, giving me the choice of an unopened bottle from among those three. Hands down I preferred then, and prefer now, the Tomatin 15 Tempranillo Finish. You'll notice that this 15 Tempranillo is at 52% ABV compared to 40 and 43% for the other two. I like a lot of flavour. Sometimes people comment to me that I give out a lot of high review grades. There's a simple reason for that: I find it a lot more fun to review whiskies which I really like. I can tell you that if I were reviewing Tomatin 12 and standard 15, the numbers would be much lower. The reviewed bottle is 90% full
Nose: grape, apple, pear, and citrus, with a hint of wood spice in the background and gentle floral perfume. Slightly to the sweet side, but with a nice dry balance
Taste: the fruits all vividly come to life on the palate, with additional sweetness, and a lot of intensity. The Tempranillo grape-wine influence is very clean. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. This is a Speyside malt, but at 52% this demonstrates a lot of power in its flavours
Finish: the fruits last medium to medium-long, and the close-out is on a sweet glow, with a hint of spice
Balance: Tempranillo is a grape I've always liked. Among the MANY MANY MANY Speyside mild wine-influenced malts this is one I especially like...meaning, I'd put it in the top 1/3 of malts in that category which I have sampled. Iff,...i.e. if and only if, you like that sort of mild-mannered winey Speyside whisky, and you also like a little "oomph" in your mild-mannered Speysider, then I would heartily recommend this Tomatin 15 YO Tempranillo Finish. It is clean and delicious

Victor- excellent review as always, Tomatin is my new and favorite distillery, having sampled the 18 and 30 yo expressions......... the 30yo is now my #1 whisky, I am excited to try the younger expressions. Also if you get a chance or have sampled the 30yo I recommend it. Oh and Tomatin has a 21 yo thats 52%, I know how you like the high abv. Cheers!
