Twin Valley Disillers has been operating in Rockville, Maryland for a little over one year now. Twin Valley makes vodkas, white rums, lightly aged rums, and bourbons, wheat whiskey, and corn whiskey lightly aged in 2 to 10 gallon barrels. Currently mostly 10 or 8 gallon new charred oak barrels are used for the whiskey products. The reviewed bottle is of 100% 'single barrel' wheat whiskey, "batch # 02". Whole wheat flour was used for the mash, and exogenous enzymes were used. There is no age statement on the bottle. I estimate this whiskey has been aged between 2 and 6 months. The bottle has been open for one month
Nose: nice whole wheat flour flavours are dominated by heavy alcohol spirit flavours
Taste: much better in the mouth, though the 'spirity' flavours are still present, and strongly detract from the enjoyment. I can just imagine how good this whiskey could be aged for 2 years
Finish: relatively long, with a gradual diminishment of flavours. Stays spirity
Balance: really not good, because the desirable flavours are hidden by the alcohol
Strength: strong flavours throughout. Score: 23/25 points
Quality: the wheat flour flavours are very nice; the spirity quality is not. Score: 15/25 points
Variety: adequate, but the alcohol detracts from noticing it. Score: 16/25 points
Harmony: alcohol spoils the balance. Score: 16/25 points
Total non-sequential score: 70/100 points
Comment: I applaud C. Edgardo Zuniga as he builds his distilling business from the ground up. I have tried most of his products and enjoyed many of them very much, especially his barrel strength bourbons. This reviewed wheat whiskey needs a lot more wood aging, probably at least 3 times as much as it is getting
